Tarzanreplacedtheboxinthecupboard,butalwaysthereafterhecarriedthefeaturesofthestrong,smilingfaceofhisfatherinhisheart,andinhisheadafixeddeterminationtosolvethemysteryofthestrangewordsinthelittleblackbook.
Atpresenthehadmoreimportantbusinessinhand,forhissupplyofarrowswasexhausted,andhemustneedsjourneytotheblackmen’svillageandrenewit.
Earlythefollowingmorninghesetout,and,travelingrapidly,hecamebeforemiddaytotheclearing.Oncemorehetookuphispositioninthegreattree,and,asbefore,hesawthewomeninthefieldsandthevillagestreet,andthecauldronofbubblingpoisondirectlybeneathhim.
Forhourshelayawaitinghisopportunitytodropdownunseenandgatherupthearrowsforwhichhehadcome;butnothingnowoccurredtocallthevillagersawayfromtheirhomes.Thedayworeon,andstillTarzanoftheApescrouchedabovetheunsuspectingwomanatthecauldron.
Presentlytheworkersinthefieldsreturned.Thehuntingwarriorsemergedfromtheforest,andwhenallwerewithinthepalisadethegateswereclosedandbarred.
Manycookingpotswerenowinevidenceaboutthevillage.Beforeeachhutawomanpresidedoveraboilingstew,whilelittlecakesofplantain,andcassavapuddingsweretobeseenoneveryhand.
