           Harryknewthatitmustbefulloflivingcreatures,buthewishedtheywouldallremainstillandsilentsothathecouldseparatetheirinnocentscurryingsandprowlingsfromnoisesthatmightproclaimother,sinistermovements.Herememberedthesoundofacloakslitheringoverdeadleavesmanyyearsago,andatoncethoughthehearditagainbeforementallyshakinghimself.Theirprotectiveenchantmentshadworkedforweeks;whyshouldtheybreaknow?Andyethecouldnotthrowoffthefeelingthatsomethingwasdifferenttonight.

           Severaltimeshejerkedupright,hisneckachingbecausehehadfallenasleep,slumpedatanawkwardangleagainstthesideofthetent.ThenightreachedsuchadepthofvelvetyblacknessthathemighthavebeensuspendedinlimbobetweenDisapparationandApparation.Hehadjustheldahandinfrontofhisfacetoseewhetherhecouldmakeouthisfingerswhenithappened.

           Abrightsilverlightappearedrightaheadofhim,movingthroughthetrees.Whateverthesource,itwasmovingsoundlessly.Thelightseemedsimplytodrifttowardhim.

           Hejumpedtohisfeet,hisvoicefrozeninhisthroat,andraisedHermione’swand.Hescreweduphiseyesasthelightbecameblinding,thetreesinfrontofitpitchblackinsilhouette,andstillthethingcamecloser…

           Andthenthesourceofthelightsteppedoutfrombehindanoak.Itwasasilverwhitedoe,moon-brightanddazzling,pickingherwayovertheground,stillsilent,andleavingnohoofprintsinthefinepowderingofsnow.
