           Whentheladiesreturnedtothedrawing-roomafterdinner,EmmafoundithardlypossibletopreventtheirmakingtwodistinctpartieswithsomuchperseveranceinjudgingandbehavingilldidMrs.EltonengrossJaneFairfaxandslightherself.SheandMrs.Westonwereobligedtobealmostalwayseithertalkingtogetherorsilenttogether.Mrs.Eltonleftthemnochoice.IfJanerepressedherforalittletime,shesoonbeganagain;andthoughmuchthatpassedbetweenthemwasinahalf-whisper,especiallyonMrs.Elton’sside,therewasnoavoidingaknowledgeoftheirprincipalsubjects:Thepost-officecatchingcoldfetchinglettersandfriendship,werelongunderdiscussion;andtothemsucceededone,whichmustbeatleastequallyunpleasanttoJaneinquirieswhethershehadyetheardofanysituationlikelytosuither,andprofessionsofMrs.Elton’smeditatedactivity.

           "HereisAprilcome!"saidshe,"Igetquiteanxiousaboutyou.Junewillsoonbehere."
