           EmmaandHarriethadbeenwalkingtogetheronemorning,and,inEmma’sopinion,hadbeentalkingenoughofMr.Eltonforthatday.ShecouldnotthinkthatHarriet’ssolaceorherownsinsrequiredmore;andshewasthereforeindustriouslygettingridofthesubjectastheyreturnedbutitburstoutagainwhenshethoughtshehadsucceeded,andafterspeakingsometimeofwhatthepoormustsufferinwinter,andreceivingnootheranswerthanaveryplaintive"Mr.Eltonissogoodtothepoor!"shefoundsomethingelsemustbedone.

           TheywerejustapproachingthehousewherelivedMrs.andMissBates.Shedeterminedtocalluponthemandseeksafetyinnumbers.Therewasalwayssufficientreasonforsuchanattention;Mrs.andMissBateslovedtobecalledon,andsheknewshewasconsideredbytheveryfewwhopresumedevertoseeimperfectioninher,asrathernegligentinthatrespect,andasnotcontributingwhatsheoughttothestockoftheirscantycomforts.

           ShehadhadmanyahintfromMr.Knightleyandsomefromherownheart,astoherdeficiencybutnonewereequaltocounteractthepersuasionofitsbeingverydisagreeableawasteoftimetiresomewomenandallthehorrorofbeingindangeroffallinginwiththesecond-rateandthird-rateofHighbury,whowerecallingonthemforever,andthereforesheseldomwentnearthem.
