           Thehairwascurled,andthemaidsentaway,andEmmasatdowntothinkandbemiserable.Itwasawretchedbusinessindeed!Suchanoverthrowofeverythingshehadbeenwishingfor!Suchadevelopmentofeverythingmostunwelcome!SuchablowforHarriet!thatwastheworstofall.Everypartofitbroughtpainandhumiliation,ofsomesortorother;but,comparedwiththeeviltoHarriet,allwaslight;andshewouldgladlyhavesubmittedtofeelyetmoremistakenmoreinerrormoredisgracedbymis-judgment,thansheactuallywas,couldtheeffectsofherblundershavebeenconfinedtoherself.

           "IfIhadnotpersuadedHarrietintolikingtheman,Icouldhaveborneanything.HemighthavedoubledhispresumptiontomebutpoorHarriet!"

           Howshecouldhavebeensodeceived!HeprotestedthathehadneverthoughtseriouslyofHarrietnever!Shelookedbackaswellasshecould;butitwasallconfusion.Shehadtakenuptheidea,shesupposed,andmadeeverythingbendtoit.Hismanners,however,musthavebeenunmarked,wavering,dubious,orshecouldnothavebeensomisled.
