           Theappearanceofthelittlesitting-roomastheyentered,wastranquillityitself;Mrs.Bates,deprivedofherusualemployment,slumberingononesideofthefire,FrankChurchill,atatablenearher,mostdeedilyoccupiedaboutherspectacles,andJaneFairfax,standingwithherbacktothem,intentonherpianoforte.

           Busyashewas,however,theyoungmanwasyetabletoshewamosthappycountenanceonseeingEmmaagain.

           "Thisisapleasure,"saidhe,inratheralowvoice,"comingatleasttenminutesearlierthanIhadcalculated.Youfindmetryingtobeuseful;tellmeifyouthinkIshallsucceed."

           Hecontrivedthatsheshouldbeseatedbyhim;andwassufficientlyemployedinlookingoutthebestbakedappleforher,andtryingtomakeherhelporadvisehiminhiswork,tillJaneFairfaxwasquitereadytositdowntothepianoforteagain.
