           Hewasamarriedman,withonlyonelivingchild,agirl,aboutJane’sage:andJanebecametheirguest,payingthemlongvisitsandgrowingafavouritewithall;andbeforeshewasnineyearsold,hisdaughter’sgreatfondnessforher,andhisownwishofbeingarealfriend,unitedtoproduceanofferfromColonelCampbellofundertakingthewholechargeofhereducation.Itwasaccepted;andfromthatperiodJanehadbelongedtoColonelCampbell’sfamily,andhadlivedwiththementirely,onlyvisitinghergrandmotherfromtimetotime.

           Theplanwasthatsheshouldbebroughtupforeducatingothers;theveryfewhundredpoundswhichsheinheritedfromherfathermakingindependenceimpossible.ToprovideforherotherwisewasoutofColonelCampbell’spower;forthoughhisincome,bypayandappointments,washandsome,hisfortunewasmoderateandmustbeallhisdaughter’s;but,bygivingheraneducation,hehopedtobesupplyingthemeansofrespectablesubsistencehereafter.

           SuchwasJaneFairfax’shistory.Shehadfallenintogoodhands,knownnothingbutkindnessfromtheCampbells,andbeengivenanexcellenteducation.Livingconstantlywithright-mindedandwell-informedpeople,herheartandunderstandinghadreceivedeveryadvantageofdisciplineandculture;andColonelCampbell’sresidencebeinginLondon,everylightertalenthadbeendonefulljusticeto,bytheattendanceoffirst-ratemasters.
