WhenthesurvivorsoftheshipwreckedBritanniatookrefugethere,thehandofmanbegantoorganizetheeffortsofnature.Intwoyearsandahalf,HarryGrantandhistwosailorshadmetamorphosedtheisland.Severalacresofwell-cultivatedlandwerestockedwithvegetablesofexcellentquality.
Thehousewasshadedbyluxuriantgum-trees.Themagnificentoceanstretchedbeforethewindows,sparklinginthesunlight.
