           JohnManglesfeltinhisownbreastallthatGlenarvanwassuffering.Hedeterminedtoconquerthedifficultyatanyprice,andconstructedacanoeintheAustralianmanner,withlargesheetsofbarkofthegum-trees.Thesesheetswerekepttogetherbybarsofwood,andformedaveryfragileboat.Thecaptainandthesailormadeatrialtripinitduringtheday.Allthatskill,andstrength,andtact,andcouragecoulddotheydid;buttheywerescarcelyinthecurrentbeforetheywereupsidedown,andnearlypaidwiththeirlivesforthedangerousexperiment.Theboatdisappeared,draggeddownbytheeddy.JohnManglesandWilsonhadnotgonetenfathoms,andtheriverwasamilebroad,andswollenbytheheavyrainsandmeltedsnows.

           Thuspassedthe19thand20thofJanuary.TheMajorandGlenarvanwentfivemilesuptheriverinsearchofafavorablepassage,buteverywheretheyfoundthesameroaring,rushing,impetuoustorrent.
