           OnceTotogottooneartheopentrapdoor, andfellin;andatfirstthelittlegirlthoughtshehadlosthim. Butsoonshesawoneofhisearsstickingupthroughthehole, forthestrongpressureoftheairwaskeepinghimupsothathecouldnotfall. Shecrepttothehole,caughtTotobytheear,anddraggedhimintotheroomagain, afterwardclosingthetrapdoorsothatnomoreaccidentscouldhappen. 

           Hourafterhourpassedaway, andslowlyDorothygotoverherfright; butshefeltquitelonely,andthewindshriekedsoloudlyallaboutherthatshenearlybecamedeaf. Atfirstshehadwonderedifshewouldbedashedtopieceswhenthehousefellagain; butasthehourspassedandnothingterriblehappened, shestoppedworryingandresolvedtowaitcalmlyandseewhatthefuturewouldbring. Atlastshecrawledovertheswayingfloortoherbed, andlaydownuponit; andTotofollowedandlaydownbesideher. 

           Inspiteoftheswayingofthehouseandthewailingofthewind, Dorothysoonclosedhereyesandfellfastasleep.
