TotojumpedoutofDorothy’sarmsandhidunderthebed, andthegirlstartedtogethim. AuntEm,badlyfrightened,threwopenthetrapdoorinthefloorandclimbeddowntheladderintothesmall,darkhole. DorothycaughtTotoatlastandstartedtofollowheraunt. Whenshewashalfwayacrosstheroomtherecameagreatshriekfromthewind, andthehouseshooksohard thatshelostherfooting andsatdownsuddenlyuponthefloor.
Thenastrangethinghappened.
Thehousewhirledaroundtwoorthreetimesandroseslowlythroughtheair. Dorothyfeltasifsheweregoingupinaballoon.
Thenorthandsouthwindsmetwherethehousestood, andmadeittheexactcenterofthecyclone. Inthemiddleofacyclonetheairisgenerallystill, butthegreatpressureofthewindoneverysideofthehouse raisedituphigherandhigher, untilitwasattheverytopofthecyclone; andthereitremainedandwascarriedmilesandmilesawayaseasilyasyoucouldcarryafeather.
Itwasverydark,andthewindhowledhorriblyaroundher, butDorothyfoundshewasridingquiteeasily.
