Thingswerelookingprettybadagain,whensuddenlyBilboappearedandchargedintotheastonishedspidersunexpectedlyfromtheside."Goon!Goon!"heshouted."Iwilldothestinging!"Andhedid.Hedartedbackwardsandforwards,slashingatspider-threads,hackingattheirlegs,andstabbingattheirfatbodiesiftheycametoonear.Thespidersswelledwithrage,andsplutteredandfrothed,andhissedouthorriblecurses;buttheyhadbecomemortallyafraidofSting,anddarednotcomeverynear,nowthatithadcomeback.Socurseastheywould,theirpreymovedslowlybutsteadilyaway.Itwasamostterriblebusiness,andseemedtotakehours.Butatlast,justwhenBilbofeltthathecouldnotlifthishandforasinglestrokemore,thespiderssuddenlygaveitup,andfollowedthemnomore,butwentbackdisappointedtotheirdarkcolony.
Thedwarvesthennoticedthattheyhadcometotheedgeofaringwhereelf-fireshadbeen.Whetheritwasoneofthosetheyhadseenthenightbefore,theycouldnottell.
