Butitseemedthatsomegoodmagiclingeredinsuchspots,whichthespidersdidnotlike.Atanyrateherethelightwasgreener,andtheboughslessthickandthreatening,andtheyhadachancetorestanddrawbreath.
Theretheylayforsometime,puffingandpanting.putverysoontheybegantoaskquestions.Theyhadtohavethewholevanishingbusinesscarefullyexplained,andthefindingoftheringinterestedthemsomuchthatforawhiletheyforgottheirowntroubles.BalininparticularinsistedonhavingtheGollumstory,riddlesandall,toldalloveragain,withtheringinitsproperplace.Butafteratimethelightbegantofail,andthenotherquestionswereasked.Wherewerethey,andwherewastheirpath,andwherewasthereanyfood,andwhatweretheygoingtodonext?Thesequestionstheyaskedoverandoveragain,anditwasfromlittleBilbothattheyseemedtoexpecttogettheanswers.FromwhichyoucanseethattheyhadchangedtheiropinionofMr.Bagginsverymuch,andhadbeguntohaveagreatrespectforhim(asGandalfhadsaidtheywould).Indeedtheyreallyexpectedhimtothinkofsomewonderfulplanforhelpingthem,andwerenotmerelygrumbling.Theyknewonlytoowellthattheywouldsoonallhavebeendead,ifithadnotbeenforthehobbit;andtheythankedhimmanytimes.Someofthemevengotupandbowedrighttothegroundbeforehim,thoughtheyfelloverwiththeeffort,andcouldnotgetontheirlegsagainforsometime.KnowingthetruthaboutthevanishingdidnotlessentheiropinionofBilboatall;fortheysawthathehadsomewits,aswellasluckandamagicring-andallthreeareveryusefulpossessions.InfacttheypraisedhimsomuchthatBilbobegantofeeltherereallywassomethingofaboldadventurerabouthimselfafterall,thoughheIwouldhavefeltalotbolderstill,iftherehadbeenanythingtoeat.
Buttherewasnothing,nothingatall;andnoneofthemWerefittogoandlookforanything,ortosearchforthelostpath.
