NowwewillreturntoBilboandthedwarves.Allnightoneofthemhadwatched,butwhenmorningcametheyhadnotheardorseenanysignofdanger.Butevermorethicklythebirdsweregathering.TheircompaniescameflyingfromtheSouth;andthecrowsthatstilllivedabouttheMountainwerewheelingandcryingunceasinglyabove.
"Somethingstrangeishappening,"saidThorin."Thetimehasgonefortheautumnwanderings;andthesearebirdsthatdwellalwaysintheland;therearestarlingsandflocksoffinches;andfarofftherearemanycarrionbirdsasifabattlewereafoot!"
SuddenlyBilbopointed:"Thereisthatoldthrushagain!"hecried."Heseemstohaveescaped,whenSmaugsmashedthemountain-side,butIdon’tsupposethesnailshave!"
Sureenoughtheoldthrushwasthere,andasBilbopointed,heflewtowardsthemandperchedonastonenearby.Thenheflutteredhiswingsandsang;thenhecockedhisheadononeside,asiftolisten;andagainhesang,andagainhelistened.
"Ibelieveheistryingtotellussomething,"saidBalin;"butIcannotfollowthespeechofsuchbirds,itisveryquickanddifficult.CanyoumakeitoutBaggins?"
