Forhesawspidersswarmingupalltheneighboringtrees,andcrawlingalongtheboughsabovetheheadsofthedwarves.
Downthedwarvesscrambledorjumpedordropped,elevenallinaheap,mostofthemveryshakyandlittleuseontheirlegs.Theretheywereatlast,twelveofthemcountingpooroldBombur,whowasbeingproppeduponeithersidebyhiscousinBifur,andhisbrotherBofur;andBilbowasdancingaboutandwavinghisSting;andhundredsofangryspidersweregogglingatthemallroundandaboutandabove.Itlookedprettyhopeless.Thenthebattlebegan.Someofthedwarveshadknives,andsomehadsticks,andallofthemcouldgetatstones;andBilbohadhiselvishdagger.
Againandagainthespiderswerebeatenoff,andmanyofthemwerekilled.Butitcouldnotgoonforlong.Bilbowasnearlytiredout;onlyfourofthedwarveswereabletostandfirmly,andsoontheywouldallbeoverpoweredlikewearyflies.Alreadythespiderswerebeginningtoweavetheirwebsallroundthemagainfromtreetotree.IntheendBilbocouldthinkofnoplanexcepttoletthedwarvesintothesecretofhisring.Hewasrathersorryaboutit,butitcouldnotbehelped.
"Iamgoingtodisappear,"hesaid."Ishalldrawthespidersoff,ifIcan;andyoumustkeeptogetherandmakeintheoppositedirection.Totheleftthere,thatismoreorlessthewaytowardstheplacewherewelastsawtheelf-fires."
Itwasdifficulttogetthemtounderstand,whatwiththeirdizzyheads,andtheshouts,andthewhackingofsticksandthethrowingofstones;butatlastBilbofelthecoulddelaynolonger-thespidersweredrawingtheircircleevercloser.Hesuddenlyslippedonhisring,andtothegreatastonishmentofthedwarveshevanished.
