           InthiswaytheyrescuedKili,Bifur,Bofur,DonandNori.PooroldBomburwassoexhausted-hewasthefattestandhadbeenconstantlypinchedandpoked-thathejustrolledoffthebranchandfellplopontotheground,fortunatelyontoleaves,andlaythere.Buttherewerestillfivedwarveshangingattheendofthebranchwhenthespidersbegantocomeback,morefullofragethanever.Bilboimmediatelywenttotheendofthebranchnearestthetree-trunkandkeptbackthosethatcrawledup.HehadtakenoffhisringwhenherescuedFiliandforgottentoputitonagain,sonowtheyallbegantosplutterandhiss:

           "Nowweseeyou,younastylittlecreature!Wewilleatyouandleaveyourbonesandskinhangingonatree.Ugh!he’sgotastinghashe?Well,we’llgethimallthesame,andthenwe’llhanghimheaddownwardsforadayortwo."

           Whilethiswasgoingon,theotherdwarveswereworkingattherestofthecaptives,andcuttingatthethreadswiththeirknives.Soonallwouldbefree,thoughitwasnotclearwhatwouldhappenafterthat.Thespidershadcaughtthemprettyeasilythenightbefore,butthathadbeenunawaresandinthedark.Thistimetherelookedlikebeingahorriblebattle.SuddenlyBilbonoticedthatsomeofthespidershadgatheredroundoldBomburonthefloor,andhadtiedhimupagainandweredragginghimaway.Hegaveashoutandslashedatthespidersinfrontofhim.Theyquicklygaveway,andhescrambledandfelldownthetreerightintothemiddleofthoseontheground.Hislittleswordwassomethingnewinthewayofstingsforthem.Howitdartedtoandfro!Itshonewithdelightashestabbedatthem.HalfadozenwerekilledbeforetherestdrewoffandleftBomburtoBilbo."Comedown!Comedown!"heshoutedtothedwarvesonthebranch."Don’tstayupthereandbenetted!"
