           ThisfloodoftearsleftMr.Sowerberrynoalternative.IfhehadhesitatedforoneinstanttopunishOlivermostseverely,itmustbequitecleartoeveryexperiencedreaderthathewouldhavebeen,accordingtoallprecedentsindisputesofmatrimonyestablished,abrute,anunnaturalhusband,aninsultingcreature,abaseimitationofaman,andvariousotheragreeablecharacterstoonumerousforrecitalwithinthelimitsofthischapter.Todohimjustice,hewas,asfarashispowerwentitwasnotveryextensivekindlydisposedtowardstheboy;perhaps,becauseitwashisinteresttobeso;perhaps,becausehiswifedislikedhim.Thefloodoftears,however,lefthimnoresource;soheatoncegavehimadrubbing,whichsatisfiedevenMrs.Sowerberryherself,andrenderedMr.Bumble’ssubsequentapplicationoftheparochialcane,ratherunnecessary.Fortherestoftheday,hewasshutupinthebackkitchen,incompanywithapumpandasliceofbread;andatnight,Mrs.Sowerberry,aftermakingvariousremarksoutsidethedoor,bynomeanscomplimentarytothememoryofhismother,lookedintotheroom,and,amidstthejeersandpointingsofNoahandCharlotte,orderedhimupstairstohisdismalbed.

           Itwasnotuntilhewasleftaloneinthesilenceandstillnessofthegloomyworkshopoftheundertaker,thatOlivergavewaytothefeelingswhichtheday’streatmentmaybesupposedlikelytohaveawakenedinamerechild.
