           Whatanexcellentexampleofthepowerofdress,youngOliverTwistwas! Wrappedintheblanketwhichhadhithertoformedhisonlycovering, hemighthavebeenthechildofanoblemanorabeggar; itwouldhavebeenhardforthehaughtieststrangertohaveassignedhimhisproperstationinsociety. Butnowthathewasenvelopedintheoldcalicorobes whichhadgrownyellowinthesameservice, hewasbadgedandticketed,andfellintohisplaceatonce aparishchildtheorphanofaworkhousethehumble,half-starveddrudge tobecuffedandbuffetedthroughtheworlddespisedbyall,andpitiedbynone. 

           Olivercriedlustily. Ifhecouldhaveknownthathewasanorphan,lefttothetendermerciesofchurch-wardensandoverseers, perhapshewouldhavecriedthelouder.
