Wehadnodifficultyinfindingthebroadelephanttrail,whichVentvögel,afterexamination,pronouncedtohavebeenmadebybetweentwentyandthirtyelephants,mostofthemfull-grownbulls. Buttheherdhadmovedonsomewayduringthenight,anditwasnineo’clock,andalreadyveryhot,before,bythebrokentrees,bruisedleavesandbark,andsmokingdroppings,weknewthatwecouldnotbefarfromthem.

Itwasasplendidsight,fortheywereonlyabouttwohundredyardsfromus. Takingahandfulofdrygrass,Ithrewitintotheairtoseehowthewindwas;forifoncetheywindedusIknewtheywouldbeoffbeforewecouldgetashot. Findingthat,ifanything,itblewfromtheelephantstous,wecreptonstealthily,andthankstothecovermanagedtogetwithinfortyyardsorsoofthegreatbrutes. Justinfrontofus,andbroadsideon,stoodthreesplendidbulls,oneofthemwithenormoustusks. IwhisperedtotheothersthatIwouldtakethemiddleone;SirHenrycoveringtheelephanttotheleft,andGoodthebullwiththebigtusks.
