Inafewmoreminutestheregimentsdestinedtocarryouttheflankingmovementshadtrampedoffinsilence, keepingcarefullytotheleeoftherisinggroundinordertoconcealtheiradvancefromthekeeneyesofTwala’sscouts.
HalfanhourormorewasallowedtoelapsebetweenthesettingoutofthehornsorwingsofthearmybeforeanystirwasmadebytheGreysandtheirsupportingregiment,knownastheBuffaloes,whichformeditschest,andweredestinedtobearthebruntofthebattle.
Bothoftheseregimentswerealmostperfectlyfresh,andoffullstrength, theGreyshavingbeeninreserveinthemorning,andhavinglostbutasmallnumberofmeninsweepingbackthatpartoftheattackwhichhadprovedsuccessfulinbreakingthelineofdefence,ontheoccasionwhenIchargedwiththemandwasstunnedformypains. AsfortheBuffaloes,theyhadformedthethirdlineofdefenceontheleft,andsincetheattackingforceatthatpointhadnotsucceededinbreakingthroughthesecond,theyhadscarcelycomeintoactionatall.
