Thishill,whichisofaformationcommoninSouthAfrica,isnotveryhigh;indeed,itsgreatestelevationisscarcelymorethan200feet,butitisshapedlikeahorseshoe,anditssidesareratherprecipitousandstrewnwithboulders. Onthegrasstable-landatitssummitisamplecamping-ground,whichhadbeenutilisedasamilitarycantonmentofnomeanstrength. Itsordinarygarrisonwasoneregimentofthreethousandmen,butaswetoiledupthesteepsideofthemountaininthereturningmoonlightweperceivedthattherewereseveralofsuchregimentsencampedthere.
Reachingthetable-landatlast,wefoundcrowdsofmenrousedfromtheirsleep,shiveringwithfearandhuddleduptogetherintheutmostconsternationatthenaturalphenomenonwhichtheywerewitnessing.
