AsforGood,hesworefeebly,whileFoulatathrewherarmsroundhisneckandshrieked.

Itwasaghastlysight. Thereattheendofthelongstonetable,holdinginhisskeletonfingersagreatwhitespear,satDeathhimself,shapedintheformofacolossalhumanskeleton,fifteenfeetormoreinheight. Highabovehisheadheheldthespear,asthoughintheacttostrike; onebonyhandrestedonthestonetablebeforehim,inthepositionamanassumesonrisingfromhisseat,whilsthisframewasbentforwardsothatthevertebræoftheneckandthegrinning,gleamingskullprojectedtowardsus, andfixeditsholloweye-placesuponus,thejawsalittleopen,asthoughitwereabouttospeak.
"Greatheavens!"saidIfaintly,atlast,"whatcanitbe?"
"Andwhatarethosethings?"askedGood,pointingtothewhitecompanyroundthetable.
