Infiveminutesthefateofthebattlewasdecided. Takenonbothflanks,anddismayedattheawfulslaughterinflicteduponthembytheGreysandBuffaloes,Twala’sregimentsbrokeintoflight, andsoonthewholeplainbetweenusandLoowasscatteredwithgroupsofrunningsoldiersmakinggoodtheirretreat. AsforthehoststhathadsorecentlysurroundedusandtheBuffaloes,theymeltedawayasthoughbymagic,andpresentlywewereleftstandingtherelikearockfromwhichtheseahasretreated. Butwhatasightitwas!Aroundusthedeadanddyinglayinheaped-upmasses,andofthegallantGreysthereremainedbutninety-fivemenupontheirfeet. Morethanthreethousandfourhundredhadfalleninthisoneregiment,mostofthemnevertoriseagain.

AtthismomenttheBuffaloesbegantomarchpastourpositionontheroadtoLoo,andastheywentamessagewasbroughttousfromIgnosirequestingInfadoos,SirHenry,andmyselftojointhem.
