Theslaughterwastrulyawful,hundredsfallingeveryminute; andfromamongtheshoutsofthewarriorsandthegroansofthedying,settothemusicofclashingspears,cameacontinuoushissingundertoneof"S’gee,s’gee," thenoteoftriumphofeachvictorashepassedhisassegaithroughandthroughthebodyofhisfallenfoe.
Butperfectdisciplineandsteadyandunchangingvalourcandowonders,andoneveteransoldierisworthtwoyoungones,assoonbecameapparentinthepresentcase. ForjustwhenwethoughtthatitwasalloverwiththeGreys,andwerepreparingtotaketheirplacesosoonastheymaderoombybeingdestroyed,IheardSirHenry’sdeepvoiceringingoutthroughthedin, andcaughtaglimpseofhiscirclingbattle-axeashewavedithighabovehisplumes.
