Butastheydrewneartherootofthetonguetheyhesitated,havingdiscoveredthatonlyoneregimentcouldadvanceintothegorgeatatime, andthatthere,someseventyyardsfromthemouthofit,unassailableexceptinfront,onaccountofthehighwallsofboulder-strewngroundoneachside,stoodthefamousregimentofGreys,theprideandgloryoftheKukuanaarmy,readytoholdthewayagainsttheirpowerasthethreeRomansonceheldthebridgeagainstthousands.
Theyhesitated,andfinallystoppedtheiradvance; therewasnoeagernesstocrossspearswiththesethreegrimranksofwarriorswhostoodsofirmandready. Presently,however,atallgeneral,wearingthecustomaryhead-dressofnoddingostrichplumes,appeared,attendedbyagroupofchiefsandorderlies,being,Ithought,noneotherthanTwalahimself.
