Theexpressiononhisfacewasmostcurious, andgavemetheideaofamanwhowasstrugglingwithpartialsuccesstobringsomethinglongagoforgottenbackintohismind.
Allthiswhilewehadbeenpressingonatagoodratetowardstheundulatingplainbeneathus. Themountainswehadcrossednowloomedhighaboveourheads,andSheba’sBreastswereveiledmodestlyindiaphanouswreathsofmist. Aswewentthecountrygrewmoreandmorelovely. Thevegetationwasluxuriant,withoutbeingtropical;thesunwasbrightandwarm,butnotburning; andagraciousbreezeblewsoftlyalongtheodorousslopesofthemountains. Indeed,thisnewlandwaslittlelessthananearthlyparadise;inbeauty,innaturalwealth,andinclimateIhaveneverseenitslike. TheTransvaalisafinecountry,butitisnothingtoKukuanaland.
SosoonaswestartedInfadooshaddespatchedarunnertowarnthepeopleofthekraal,which,bytheway,wasinhismilitarycommand,ofourarrival.
