ItwaswearyworkforKotick.Theherdneverwentmorethanfortyorfiftymilesaday,andstoppedtofeedatnight,andkeptclosetotheshoreallthetime;whileKotickswamroundthem,andoverthem,andunderthem,buthecouldnothurrythemupone-halfmile.Astheywentfarthernorththeyheldabowingcouncileveryfewhours,andKoticknearlybitoffhismustachewithimpatiencetillhesawthattheywerefollowingupawarmcurrentofwater,andthenherespectedthemmore.
Onenighttheysankthroughtheshinywater—sanklikestones—andforthefirsttimesincehehadknownthembegantoswimquickly.Kotickfollowed,andthepaceastonishedhim,forheneverdreamedthatSeaCowwasanythingofaswimmer.Theyheadedforacliffbytheshore—acliffthatrandownintodeepwater,andplungedintoadarkholeatthefootofit,twentyfathomsunderthesea.
