           Ferncamealmosteverydaytovisithim.Shefoundanoldmilkingstoolthathadbeendiscarded,andsheplacedthestoolinthesheepfoldnexttoWilbur’spen.Hereshesatquietlyduringthelongafternoons,thinkingandlisteningandwatchingWilbur.Thesheepsoongottoknowherandtrusther.Sodidthegeese,wholivedwiththesheep.Alltheanimalstrustedher,shewassoquietandfriendly.Mr.ZuckermandidnotallowhertotakeWilburout,andhedidnotallowhertogetintothepigpen.ButhetoldFernthatshecouldsitonthestoolandwatchWilburaslongasshewantedto.Itmadeherhappyjusttobenearthepig,anditmadeWilburhappytoknowthatshewassittingthere,rightoutsidehispen.Butheneverhadanyfunnowalks,norides,noswims.

           OneafternooninJune,whenWilburwasalmosttwomonthsold,hewanderedoutintohissmallyardoutsidethebarn.Fernhadnotarrivedforherusualvisit.Wilburstoodinthesunfeelinglonelyandbored.

           "There’sneveranythingtodoaroundhere,"hethought.Hewalkedslowlytohisfoodtroughandsniffedtoseeifanythinghadbeenoverlookedatlunch.Hefoundasmallstripofpotatoskinandateit.Hisbackitched,soheleanedagainstthefenceandrubbedagainsttheboards.Whenhetiredofthis,hewalkedindoors,climbedtothetopofthemanurepile,andsatdown.Hedidn’tfeellikegoingtosleep,hedidn’tfeellikedigging,hewastiredofstandingstill,tiredoflyingdown.
