Theearlysummerdaysonafarmarethehappiestandfairestdaysoftheyear.Lilacsbloomandmaketheairsweet,andthenfade.Appleblossomscomewiththelilacs,andthebeesvisitaroundamongtheappletrees.Thedaysgrowwarmandsoft.Schoolends,andchildrenhavetimetoplayandtofishfortroutsinthebrook.Averyoftenbroughtatrouthomeinhispocket,warmandstiffandreadytobefriedforsupper.
Nowthatschoolwasover,Fernvisitedthebarnalmosteveryday,tositquietlyonherstool.Theanimalstreatedherasanequal.Thesheeplaycalmlyatherfeet.
AroundthefirstofJuly,theworkhorseswerehitchedtothemowingmachine,andMr.Zuckermanclimbedintotheseatanddroveintothefield.Allmorningyoucouldheartherattleofthemachineasitwentroundandround,whilethetallgrassfelldownbehindthecutterbarinlonggreenswathes.Nextday,iftherewasnothundershower,allhandswouldhelprakeandpitchandload,andthehaywouldbehauledtothebarninthehighhaywagon,withFernandAveryridingatthetopoftheload.Thenthehaywouldbehoisted,sweetandwarm,intothebigloft,untilthewholebarnseemedlikeawonderfulbedoftimothyandclover.Itwasfinetojumpin,andperfecttohidein.AndsometimesAverywouldfindalittlegrasssnakeinthehay,andwouldaddittotheotherthingsinhispocket.
Earlysummerdaysareajubileetimeforbirds.Inthefields,aroundthehouse,inthebarn,inthewoods,intheswamp-everywhereloveandsongsandnestsandeggs.
