           Insteadofpullingittopiecesandtakingthestick,shestuckitbetweentwobranchesofthehedge,sothatitstoodloomingrakishlyabovethemay,withthetatteredsleevesonitsstickarmsflutteringoverthehedge.

           Shefoundastickanhourorsolaterwhenshesatdownonthebanktorestandeatherbreadandcheese.Therewerenoisesinthehedgebehindher:littlestrangledsqueakings,followedbyheavingsthatshookmaypetalsoffthehedge.Sophiecrawledonherbonykneestopeerpastleavesandflowersandthornsintotheinsideofthehedge,anddiscoveredathingraydoginthere.Itwashopelesslytrappedbyastoutstickwhichhadsomehowgottwistedintoaropethatwastiedarounditsneck.Thestickhadwedgeditselfbetweentwobranchesonthehedgesothatthedogcouldbarelymove.ItrolleditseyeswildlyatSophie’speeringface.

           Asagirl,Sophiewasscaredofalldogs.Evenasanoldwoman,shewasquitealarmedbythetworowsofwhitefangsinthecreature’sopenjaws.
