“NowIcanspeak,”itsaidinasomewhatmushyvoice.
“Imayfaint,”Fannyannounced,onthestairs.
“Nonsense,”Mrs.Fairfaxsaid,behindFanny.“Thething’sonlyamagician’sgolem.Ithastodowhatitwassenttodo.They’requiteharmless.”
