           Sophiesnorted.Michaelleftoffworkingonhisnewspellandranupanddownstairs.Thingsbecameveryrestless.InthetimeittookSophietosewtenmorebluetrianglesMichaelranupstairswithlemonandhoney,withaparticularbook,withcoughmixture,withaspoontotakethecoughmixturewith,andthenwithnosedrops,throatpastilles,gargle,pen,paper,threemorebooks,andaninfusionofwillowbark.Peoplekeptknockingatthedoortoo,makingSophiejumpandCalciferflickeruneasily.Whennooneopenedthedoor,someofthepeoplewentonhammeringforfiveminutesorso,rightlythinkingtheywerebeingignored.

           Bythistime,Sophiewasbecomingworriedabouttheblue-and-silversuit.Itwasgettingsmallerandsmaller.Onecannotsewinthatnumberoftriangleswithouttakingupquitealotofclothintheseams.‘Michael,”shesaidwhenMichaelcamerushingdownstairsagainbecauseHowlfanciedabaconsandwichforlunch.“Michel,isthereawayofmakingsmallclotheslarger?”

           “Oh,yes,”saidMichael.“That’sjustwhatmynewspellis—whenIgetthechancetoworkonit.Hewantssixslicesofbaconinthesandwich.CouldyouaskCalcifer?”

           SophieandCalciferexchangedspeakinglooks.“Idon’tthinkhe’sdying,”Calcifersaid.

           “I’llgiveyoutherindstoeatifyoubendyourheaddown,”Sophiesaid,layingdownhersewing.ItwaseasiertobribeCalciferthanbullyhim.
