Lettiesawher.Shelookedshakenforamoment.Thenhereyesandhersmilewidenedandsheshouted,“Sophie!”
“CanItalktoyou?”Sophieyelled.“Somewhere,”sheshouted,alittlehelplessly,asalargewell-dressedelbowjostledherbackfromthecounter.
“Justamoment!”Lettiescreamedback.Sheturnedtothegirlnexttoherandwhispered.Thegirlnodded,grinned,andcametotakeLettie’splace.
“You’llhavetohavemeinstead,”shesaidtothecrowd.“Who’snext?”
“ButIwanttotalktoyou,Lettie!”oneofthefarmers’sonsyelled.
“TalktoCarrie,”Lettiesaid.“Iwanttotalktomysister.”Nobodyreallyseemedtomind.TheyjostledSophiealongtotheendofthecounterwhereLettieheldupaflapandbeckoned,andtoldhernottokeepLettieallday.WhenSophiehadedgedthroughtheflap,Lettieseizedherwristanddraggedherintothebackoftheshop,toaroomsurroundedbyrackuponwoodenrack,eachonefilledwithrowsofcakes.Lettiepulledforwardtwostools.“Sitdown,”shesaid.Shelookedinthenearestrack,inanabsent-mindedway,andhandedSophieacreamcakeoutofit.“Youmayneedthis,”shesaid.
