           MissAngorian’sroomwasnotdesignedforcomfortbutforstudy.Thoughmanyofthethingsinitwerestrange,Sophieunderstoodthewallsofbooks,andthepilesofpaperonthetable,andthefoldersstackedonthefloor.ShesatandwatchedMichaelstaringsheepishlyandHowlturningonhischarm.

           “HowisityoucometoknowwhoIam?”Howlaskedbeguilingly.

           “Youseemtohavecausedalotofgossipinthistown,”MissAngoriansaid,busysortingthroughpapersonthetable.

           “Andwhathavethosepeoplewhogossiptoldyou?”Howlasked.HeleanedlanguishinglyontheendofthetableandtriedtocatchMissAngorian’seye.

           “Thatyoudisappearandturnupratherunpredictably,foronething,”MissAngoriansaid.

           “Andwhatelse?”HowlfollowedMissAngorian’smovementswithsuchalookthatSophieknewLettie’sonlychancewasforMissAngoriantofallinstantlyinlovewithHowltoo.

           ButMissAngorianwasnotthatkindoflady.Shesaid,“Manyotherthings,fewofthemtoyourcredit,”andcausedMichaeltoblushbylookingathimandSophieinawaythatsuggestedthesethingswerenotfitfortheirears.Sheheldayellowishwavy-edgedpaperouttoHowl.“Hereitis,”shesaidseverely.“Doyouknowwhatitis?”

           “Ofcourse,”saidHowl.

           “Thenpleasetellme,”saidMissAngorian.

           Howltookthepaper.TherewasabitofascuffleashetriedtotakeMissAngorian’shandwithit.MissAngorianwonthescuffleandputherhandsbehindherback.HowlsmiledmeltinglyandpassedthepapertoMichael.“Youtellher,”hesaid.
