PeoplelikeJimmybecomesofixatedonfeelinggoodaboutthemselvesthattheymanagetodeludethemselvesintobelievingthattheyareaccomplishinggreatthingsevenwhenthey’renot.Theybelievethey’rethebrilliantpresenteronstagewhenactuallythey’remakingafoolofthemselves.Theybelievethey’rethesuccessfulstart-upfounderwhen,infact,they’veneverhadasuccessfulventure.Theycallthemselveslifecoachesandchargemoneytohelpothers,eventhoughthey’reonlytwenty-fiveyearsoldandhaven’tactuallyaccomplishedanythingsubstantialintheirlives.
Entitledpeopleexudeadelusionaldegreeofself-confidence.Thisconfidencecanbealluringtoothers,atleastforalittlewhile.Insomeinstances,theentitledperson’sdelusionallevelofconfidencecanbecomecontagiousandhelpthepeoplearoundtheentitledpersonfeelmoreconfidentinthemselvestoo.DespiteallofJimmy’sshenanigans,Ihavetoadmitthatitwasfunhangingoutwithhimsometimes.Youfeltindestructiblearoundhim.
Buttheproblemwithentitlementisthatitmakespeopleneedtofeelgoodaboutthemselvesallthetime,evenattheexpenseofthosearoundthem.Andbecauseentitledpeoplealwaysneedtofeelgoodaboutthemselves,theyendupspendingmostoftheirtimethinkingaboutthemselves.Afterall,ittakesalotofenergyandworktoconvinceyourselfthatyourshitdoesn’tstink,especiallywhenyou’veactuallybeenlivinginatoilet.
