Oneofthoserealizationswasthis:thatlifeitselfisaformofsuffering.Therichsufferbecauseoftheirriches.Thepoorsufferbecauseoftheirpoverty.Peoplewithoutafamilysufferbecausetheyhavenofamily.Peoplewithafamilysufferbecauseoftheirfamily.Peoplewhopursueworldlypleasuressufferbecauseoftheirworldlypleasures.Peoplewhoabstainfromworldlypleasuressufferbecauseoftheirabstention.
Thisisn’ttosaythatallsufferingisequal.Somesufferingiscertainlymorepainfulthanothersuffering.Butweallmustsuffernonetheless.
Yearslater,theprincewouldbuildhisownphilosophyandshareitwiththeworld,andthiswouldbeitsfirstandcentraltenet:thatpainandlossareinevitableandweshouldletgooftryingtoresistthem.TheprincewouldlaterbecomeknownastheBuddha.Andincaseyouhaven’theardofhim,hewaskindofabigdeal.
