Ifwefollowthe“dosomething”principle,failurefeelsunimportant.Whenthestandardofsuccessbecomesmerelyacting—whenanyresultisregardedasprogressandimportant,wheninspirationisseenasarewardratherthanaprerequisite—wepropelourselvesahead.Wefeelfreetofail,andthatfailuremovesusforward.
The“dosomething”principlenotonlyhelpsusovercomeprocrastination,butit’salsotheprocessbywhichweadoptnewvalues.Ifyou’reinthemidstofanexistentialshitstormandeverythingfeelsmeaningless—ifallthewaysyouusedtomeasureyourselfhavecomeupshortandyouhavenoideawhat’snext,ifyouknowthatyou’vebeenhurtingyourselfchasingfalsedreams,orifyouknowthatthere’ssomebettermetricyoushouldbemeasuringyourselfwithbutyoudon’tknowhow—theansweristhesame:
Dosomething.
That“something”canbethesmallestviableactiontowardsomethingelse.Itcanbeanything.
Recognizethatyou’vebeenanentitledprickinallofyourrelationshipsandwanttostartdevelopingmorecompassionforothers?Dosomething.Startsimple.Makeitagoaltolistentosomeone’sproblemandgivesomeofyourtimetohelpingthatperson.Justdoitonce.Orpromiseyourselfthatyouwillassumethatyouaretherootofyourproblemsnexttimeyougetupset
