           Forpeoplewhoweredissatisfiedwiththeirlives,thesesuggestiveexplanations,combinedwiththesensationalizingmedia—therewereveritableepidemicsofsexualabuseandsatanicviolencegoingon,andyoucouldbeavictimtoo—gavepeople’sunconsciousmindstheincentivetofudgetheirmemoriesabitandexplaintheircurrentsufferinginawaythatallowedthemtobevictimsandavoidresponsibility.Repressedmemorytherapythenactedasameanstopulltheseunconsciousdesiresoutandputthemintoaseeminglytangibleformofamemory.

           Thisprocess,andthestateofminditresultedin,becamesocommonthatanamewasintroducedforit:falsememorysyndrome.Itchangedthewaycourtroomsoperate.Thousandsoftherapistsweresuedandlosttheirlicenses.Repressedmemorytherapyfelloutofpracticeandwasreplacedbymorepracticalmethods.
