Then,intheearly1980s,Meredithbecamearadicalfeministandbegandoingresearchintochildabuse.Shewasconfrontedwithhorrificstoryafterhorrificstoryofabuse,andshedealtwithincestsurvivors—usuallylittlegirls—foryearsonend.Shealsoreportedextensivelyonanumberofinaccuratestudiesthatcameoutaroundthattime—studiesthatitlaterturnedoutgrosslyoverestimatedtheprevalenceofchildmolestation.(Themostfamousstudyreportedthatathirdofadultwomenhadbeensexuallymolestedaschildren,anumberthathassincebeenshowntobefalse.)
Andontopofallofthis,Meredithfellinloveandbeganarelationshipwithanotherwoman,anincestsurvivor.Meredithdevelopedacodependentandtoxicrelationshipwithherpartner,oneinwhichMeredithcontinuallytriedto“save”theotherwomanfromhertraumaticpast.HerpartneralsousedhertraumaticpastasaweaponofguilttoearnMeredith’saffection(moreonthisandboundariesinchapter8).
