           Thechesssetswerestillonthecounter,butupcloseshecouldseethattheyweren’tverygood.Whenshepickedupthewhitequeenshewassurprisedathowlightitwas.Sheturneditover.Itwashollowinsideandmadeofplastic.Sheputitbackasthesaleswomancameupandsaid,“MayIhelpyou?”

           “DoyouhaveModernChessOpenings?”

           “Wehavechessandcheckersandbackgammon,”thewomansaid,“andavarietyofchildren’sgames.”

           “It’sabook,”Bethsaid,“aboutchess.”

           “Thebookdepartmentisacrosstheaisle.”

           Bethwenttothebookshelvesandbeganlookingthroughthem.Therewasnothingaboutchess.Therewasnoclerktoask,either.Shewentbacktothewomanatthecounterandhadtowaitalongtimetogetherattention.
