Mrs.WheatleyhadalwayscarriedBeth’sadoptionpapersandbirthcertificatewithherwhentheytraveled,andBethhadcontinuedthepractice,thoughuptonowtheyhadneverbeenneeded.DuringherfirstweekinNewYork,BennytookhertoRockefellerCenter,andsheusedtheminapplyingforherpassport.Mexicohadrequiredonlyatouristcard,andMrs.Wheatleyhadtakencareofthat.Thelittlebookletwiththegreencoverandhertight-lippedpictureinsidecametwoweekslater.Eventhoughshewasn’tsureofgoing,shehadsenttheParisacceptanceinafewdaysbeforeleavingKentuckyforOhio.
Whenthetimecame,BennydrovehertoKennedyAirportanddroppedheroffattheAirFranceterminal.“He’snotimpossible,”Bennysaid.“Youcanbeathim.”
