TheyhadtositinawaitingroomatOrlyairportforsevenhours,andwhenthetimecametoboardtheAeroflotplane,ayoungwomaninanolive-drabuniformhadtostampeverybody’sticketandstudyeverybody’spassportwhileBethandMr.Boothwaitedatthebackofthelineforanotherhour.Butitcheeredherabitwhenshefinallygottotheheadofthelineandthewomansaid,“Thechesschampion!”andsmiledbroadlyatherwithasurprisinglighteningofherfeatures.WhenBethsmiledbackather,thewomansaid,“Goodluck!”asthoughshereallymeantit.Thewomanwas,ofcourse,Russian.NoofficialinAmericawouldhaverecognizedBeth’sname.
