Atlunchtimeshetriedtositaloneinthecafeteriawithherhamsandwichandcartonofmilk,butanothergirlcameandsatacrossfromher.Neitherofthemspokeforawhile.Theothergirlwasplain,likeBeth.
WhenshehadfinishedhalfhersandwichBethlookedacrossthetableather.“Isthereaschoolchessclub?”sheasked.
Theothergirllookedup,startled.“What?”
“Dotheyhaveachessclub?Iwanttojoin.”
“Oh,”thegirlsaid.“Idon’tthinktheyhaveanythinglikethat.Youcantryoutforjuniorcheerleader.”
