Theydrovethroughfieldswheremenandwomenwereworkinginearly-morningsunlight,andatoneplacealongtheroadshesawthreeenormoustractors,farbiggerthananythingshehadseeninAmerica,drivingslowlyacrossafieldthatstretchedasfarasshecouldsee.Therewasverylittleothertrafficontheroad.Thecarstartedmovingthroughrowsofsix-andeight-storybuildingswithtinywindows,andsinceitwasawarmJunemorningevenunderthegraysky,peoplesittingonthedoorsteps.Thentheroadbegantobroaden,andtheydrovepastasmallgreenparkandanotherlargeoneandpastsomeenormous,newerbuildingsthatlookedasiftheyhadbeenbuilttolastforever.Thetraffichadbecomeheavierandtherewerepeopleonbicyclesatonesideoftheroadnowandagreatmanypedestriansonthesidewalks.
