Thegamesshewasplayingwereserious,workmanlikechessplayedbythebestplayersintheworld,andtheamountofmentalenergylatentineachmovewasstaggering.Yettheresultswereoftenmonumentallydullandinconclusive.Anenormouspowerofthoughtmightbeimplicitinasinglewhitepawnmove,say,openingupalong-rangethreatthatcouldbecomemanifestonlyinhalfadozenmoves;butBlackwouldforeseethethreatandfindthemovethatcanceleditout,andthebrilliancywouldbeaborted.Itwasfrustratingandanticlimactic,yet—becauseBennyforcedhertostopandseewhatwasgoingon—fascinating.
