           Mrs.Wheatleyhadbroughtthemagazinewithher,andtheyspentpartofthetimeontheplanemarkingthetournamentsBethwouldplayoverthenextseveralmonths.Theysettledononeamonth;Mrs.Wheatleywasafraidtheywouldrunoutofdiseasesand,asshesaid,“credibility”ifshewrotemoreexcusesthanthat.Bethwonderedtoherselfiftheyshouldn’tjustaskforpermissioninastraightforwardway—afterall,boyswereallowedtomissclassesforbasketballandfootball—butshewaswiseenoughtosaynothing.Mrs.Wheatleyseemedtotakeimmenseenjoymentindoingitthisway.Itwaslikeaconspiracy.

           ShewoninHoustonwithoutanytrouble.Shewas,asMrs.Wheatleysaid,really“gettingthehangofit.”Shewasforcedtodrawherthirdgamebuttookthefinalonebyadazzlingcombination,beatingtheforty-year-oldSouthwestChampionasthoughhewereabeginner.Theystayedovertwodays“forthesun”andvisitedtheMuseumofFineArtsandtheZoologicalGardens.OnthedayafterthetournamentBeth’spicturewasinthepaper,andthistimeitmadeherfeelgoodtoseeit.Thearticlecalledhera“Wunderkind.”Mrs.Wheatleyboughtthreecopies,saying,“Ijustmightstartascrapbook.”
