           “Itleavesoverthreehundreddollars,”Bethsaid.

           Therewasasilenceforawhile.Bethlookedatthesheetofpaper,althoughsheunderstooditperfectlywell.ShewaswonderingifsheshouldoffertosplitthemoneywithMrs.Wheatley.Shedidnotwanttodothat.Shehadwonitherself.

           Mrs.Wheatleybrokethesilence.“Perhapsyoucouldgivemetenpercent,”shesaidpleasantly.“Asanagent’scommission.”

           “Thirty-twodollars,”Bethsaid,“andseventy-sevencents.”

           “TheytoldmeatMethuenthatyouweremarvelousatmath.”

           Bethnodded.“Okay,”shesaid.

           Mrs.Wheatleywipedherchinwithhernapkinwhenshefinishedthewineandlitafinalcigarette.
