Athinbreezeworkedatsawingwhatleaveswereleftfromtheoaktrees,stackingthemneatlyagainstthewirecyclonefence.Therewaslittlebrownbirdsoccasionallyonthefence;whenapuffofleaveswouldhitthefencethebirdswouldflyoffwiththewind.Itlookedatfirstliketheleaveswerehittingthefenceandturningintobirdsandflyingaway.
Itwasafinewoodsmokedautumnday,fullofthesoundofkidspuntingfootballsandtheputterofsmallairplanes,andeverybodyshould’vebeenhappyjustbeingoutsideinit.Butweallstoodinasilentbunchwithourhandsinourpocketswhilethedoctorwalkedtogethiscar.Asilentbunch,watchingthetownspeoplewhoweredrivingpastontheirwaytoworkslowdowntogawkatallthelooniesingreenuniforms.McMurphysawhowuneasywewereandtriedtoworkusintoabettermoodbyjokingandteasingthegirl,butthismadeusfeelworsesomehow.Everybodywasthinkinghoweasyitwouldbetoreturntotheward,gobackandsaytheydecidedthenursehadbeenright;withawindlikethistheseawould’vebeenjusttoorough.
Thedoctorarrivedandweloadedupandheadedoff,meandGeorgeandHardingandBillyBibbitinthecarwithMcMurphyandthegirl,Candy;andFredricksonandSefeltandScanlonandMartiniandTademandGregoryfollowinginthedoctor’scar.Everyonewasawfullyquiet.Wepulledintoagasstationaboutamilefromthehospital;thedoctorfollowed.Hegotoutfirst,andtheservice-stationmancamebouncingout,grinningandwipinghishandsonarag.
