TherehadbeentimeswhenI’dwanderedaroundinadazeforaslongastwoweeksafterashocktreatment,livinginthatfoggy,jumbledblurwhichisawholelotliketheraggededgeofsleep,thatgrayzonebetweenlightanddark,orbetweensleepingandwakingorlivinganddying,whereyouknowyou’renotunconsciousanymorebutdon’tknowyetwhatdayitisorwhoyouareorwhat’stheuseofcomingbackatall—fortwoweeks.Ifyoudon’thaveareasontowakeupyoucanloafaroundinthatgrayzoneforalong,fuzzytime,orifyouwanttobadenoughIfoundyoucancomefightingrightoutofit.ThistimeIcamefightingoutofitinlessthanaday,lesstimethanever.

TheygaveMcMurphythreemoretreatmentsthatweek.Asquickashestartedcomingoutofone,gettingtheclickbackinhiswink,MissRatchedwouldarrivewiththedoctorandtheywouldaskhimifhefeltlikehewasreadytocomearoundandfaceuptohisproblemandcomebacktothewardforacure.Andhe’dswellup,awarethateveryoneofthosefacesonDisturbedhadturnedtowardhimandwaswaiting,andhe’dtellthenurseheregrettedthathehadbutonelifetogiveforhiscountryandshecouldkisshisrosyredassbeforehe’dgiveupthegoddamship.
