Untilnowtheanimalshadbeenaboutequallydividedintheirsympathies,butinamomentSnowball’seloquencehadcarriedthemaway. InglowingsentenceshepaintedapictureofAnimalFarmasitmightbewhensordidlabourwasliftedfromtheanimals’backs. Hisimaginationhadnowrunfarbeyondchaff-cuttersandturnip-slicers. Electricity,hesaid,couldoperatethreshingmachines,ploughs,harrows,rollers,andreapersandbinders,besidessupplyingeverystallwithitsownelectriclight,hotandcoldwater,andanelectricheater. Suddenlyheslippedanditseemedcertainthattheyhadhim. Thenhewasupagain,runningfasterthanever,thenthedogsweregainingonhimagain. OneofthemallbutclosedhisjawsonSnowball’stail,butSnowballwhiskeditfreejustintime. Thenheputonanextraspurtand,withafewinchestospare,slippedthroughaholeinthehedgeandwasseennomore.
Silentandterrified,theanimalscreptbackintothebarn. Inamomentthedogscameboundingback.
